In a recent ADP Research analysis, the Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater region landed the #2 spot among 53 major U.S. metros for new college graduates — one of the most dramatic single-year climbs in the study’s three-year history.
The annual report, published May 26 by ADP Research author Sam Adieze, ranked metros based on a composite of hiring rates, wages, and cost of living. Drawing on anonymized payroll data from more than 409,000 workers aged 20 to 29 across more than 20,000 U.S. employers, it offers one of the most data-rich looks available at where early-career talent is actually getting hired — and staying.
Tampa-St. Pete-Clearwater’s jump from 26th place to 2nd is the kind of move that commands attention in a boardroom. As ADP Research reported, the region’s hiring rate climbed from 2.6% to 3.4% year-over-year — among the fastest paces in the entire sample. That acceleration reflects a labor market that isn’t just growing; it’s gaining momentum.
The report noted that the region “made one of the biggest leaps” in the entire ranking.
For C-suite executives evaluating where to locate or expand operations, that signal matters. Hiring rate is a proxy for employer confidence — it tells you how aggressively companies in a market are building their workforces. A metro that vaults 24 spots in a single year isn’t running on hype. It’s running on fundamentals.
The broader findings reinforce what many business leaders already know about Florida’s Gulf Coast: affordability, quality of life, and a deepening talent pipeline are converging in ways that are difficult to replicate in higher-cost markets. The ADP Research data adds a rigorous, payroll-based dimension to that story.
For companies thinking about where their next chapter begins, the St. Pete EDC is ready to show you what that looks like up close.
